SUDS Compliant Driveways

If you are thinking of paving your driveway, don't forget the SUDS! In England, as of the 1st October 2008 permission is now required for all installations of impermeable paving in front gardens that exceeds 5 sqm and that which allows the run off of rain water to flow onto public highways. Please note that these regulations affect new driveways, extensions of driveways or relaying of replacing a drive.

Why have these regulations been introduced?

Flooding and drainage have become an increasing worry and a major environmental issue. Surface water run off is said to be one of the main causes of recent flooding disasters.

The new regulations apply to all methods of laying a new drive: concrete, tarmac, natural paving slabs, block paving, gravel drives and resin bonded driveways.

Permeable paving is not always suitable for the site and therefore a channeled drainage system that returns the rain water to the ground can be installed without the need for planning permission.

So what is SUDS?

SUDS stands for Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems. The ideas behind it is that the paving needs to have some kind of drainage system that will control the rain water at source rather than draining into public drains. This could mean creating a drainage channel with a soak-away or a permeable surface that allows rain water to drain between gaps.

Don't neglect the green!

With the increasing amounts of cars in the roads and the our current lifestyles that often require off road parking for more than one car it is still important that we maintain some element of 'green'. Planting can be low maintenance and as well as the environmental benefits and essential shelter for wildlife it will prevent our front gardens from becoming concrete jungles.

Please find below some of the types of driveways that we install.

Block Paving Concrete Sustainable Block Paving This permeable paving system drains water safely away by allowing surface water to pass between the blocks. Together with a specially calculated sub base it can be installed without planning permission or need of soak-aways and linear drainage.

Block Paving

Brick and block paving is the most common material used when installing new drives. They can be used to great effects when combined with a design of different colours and can provide many years of service. They look a lot more stylish than plain concrete or tarmac. Installed with the correct drainage and a soak-way in order to be SUDS compliant.

Resin Bonded Driveways

A clear resin that is mixed with a high quality aggregate and installed on a specific base. This results in an extremely hard wearing surface, resistant to weed growth and oil spillage and can be laid in a variety of colours and patterns. The real wow factor when it comes to drives. Check out our resin bound driveways page for more information.

Indian-Stone-Driveway Natural Stone Paving Natural stone paving can be well suited for use as driveway paving when installed with the correct sub base and drainage. A drive made from natural stone will add a contemporary and stylish aspect to your drive and garden. Installed with the correct drainage and a soak-way in order to be SUDS compliant.

Gravel Driveways Grid

Gone are the days that a gravel drive means ruts and unsightly dips in the drive. Using a gravel stabilisation grid underneath the gravel means that loose gravel paths and drives will transform into a firm gravel surface. An ideal surface for an affordable large SUDS compliant driveway.
